This makes zero sense to me. Scoring wise, this could be a downgrade..
I can't say as I understand this move completely by the Oilers, but it does give them a solid two-way center in return. I don't know about giving York up though...
Hmm.
Peca could find his scoring touch again.
This seems to be more or less a roster shakeup, bringing more veteran leadership to the Oilers.
At least Kevin Lowe is doing something.

Not a fan of this deal whatsoever. Ever since Peca and his team went to the finals a few years ago, he has done squat in the playoffs. Not what the Oilers needed in my opinion as York is quite the handy hard working player. And to lose a pick out of it as well.
Epihpany.
Lowe will sign Kariya.
Makes too much sense now.. Kariya > York in almost every facet, but they're the same player, thus we needed some size and grit...
Smyth - Horcoff - Hemsky
Kariya - Peca - Dvorak

Horcoff the top line center?? Jeesh..
But the best 1-2 punch in the NHL on the LW.
Either that, or he'll trade Horcoff + for Gagne and sign Zhamnov, once again citing Gagne > York, and the need for more toughness.
Gagne or Kariya will be an Oiler (or I may just kill someone..)

Horcoff + A LOT for Gagne.. how much deeper are you going to reach into that farm of yours?
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though, Lowe must have something in mind.

Depends if Bobby Clarke can sign him or not, Philly is quickly running out of cap space, but you're right.. I'm just rationalizing this, there's no way he stands pat from here.
"It's a great opportunity for the Oilers to obtain a player of Mike's caliber," stated Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe. "He is an outstanding two-way player who has been recognized as one of the top defensive players in the game. Along with his strong work ethic, he also brings outstanding leadership skills to the team."
Sounds like Lowe is getting ready to make another deal to me.. he said two-way player, but the words he's been using have been #1 Center and "One-Shot Scorer"
Enter Paul Kariya ;)
Enter Paul Kariya ;)Could I be dropping another 'giggity' soon? :D
This is exactly why a hard salary cap is a good thing for the NHL - small market teams are able to bring in big name players and become relevant again.
By the way, change your signature, man. ;)

I know... I'm going to have a find one that includes Pronger now :thumb:

I like this move
Peca
-great on faceoffs
-tough as nails
-playoff experience
On Edmonton, I am pretty sure he would be a very solid no.2 center. Sure, he had problems with his point total on the island..but then hasn't everyone?
Good move, IMO, by Lowe
Peca = Oiler?
No, Peca = cancer
good luck with that piece of garbage. That's as much time as I'll waste discussing Peca.

Peca in the playoffs:
In the last four times Peca's team has made it to the playoffs they have lost in five games each time. He has one goal and one assist in twenty games. And is minus -8.
What were you thinking Lowe :curse:

True, but look at the team he's been on and where they were seeded.
I won't comment on this until Lowe either A) Makes another move or B) says he's done.. because to me this smells of not needing York any more.
Cap space move for the Isles. As I said, don't be surprised to see Ottawa to deal one of de Vries / Smoke to the highest bidder, even if that bid is fairly low, if they know they can sign a FA they really like.
In the end though, I don't expect my Sens to make any big moves. MAYBE a second-line LW'er to add to the fray, that'd be it.
I expect Peca to find his game in EDM. We shall see.

Oiler POV it's a scoring downgrade MAnU...
York is a great skater with amazing hockey sense.. he was arguably our best trade bait (including Brewer).
However, no rants from me just yet :D

Yeah, scoring wise. But $$$ not considered Peca > York as far as I'm concerned. York is a good 50 point centerman but Peca can get you 40 while being a leader, a physical presence, and is great on the PK and in the face-off circle.
Go ahead and whine about his lack of production in the playoffs recently. ButsSince when is a two-way center, who is not relied upon for offense like he was in Buffalo with Yashin on the roster, going to score much? And the NYI were never even expected to put up a fight in any of those loses. At least Peca has done some good stuff in the playoffs before. York has a grand total of what? 6 NHL playoff GP? And he hasn't scored a goal, so he's no monster either in April. If I have the cap room, give me Mike Peca! Being a former 67 doesn't hurt either. :thumb:

Just listened to MacT rave about the past 24 hours on the radio. Few things..
He expects Horcoff to step up big time, with Hemsky, Torres, Semenov and Conklin closely behind. He said if 3 of 5 do, we're cup contenders.. I can agree with that, as long as Conklin and Hemsky are of those 3.
My main problem with this is that we pick up $2,100,000 for a slight improvement defensively, and (most likely) a slight downgrade offensively. So essentially $2,100,000 for faceoff's, grit and leadership? Eeeeh.
Like I said, sign Kariya and all is forgiven.
Current Oilers Roster:
Smyth - Peca - Dvorak
Torres - Horcoff - Hemsky
Moreau - Reasoner - Pisani
Winchester - Harvey - Laraque
Pronger - Smith
Staios - Semenov
Bergeron - Cross/Greene
Conklin
Markkanenn
I love the D, but I still think that Kariya or Gagne needs to be there to fill in the "one shot scorer" role.
Well, I can say this much, it must be awfully exciting to be a fan in Edmonton right now! This CBA is great. It's about time the small markets were let in on all the fun. :thumb:
Ottawa has been very quiet, but we already had a contender (I still like our roster better than anyone's in the East if Hasek pans out) and it's still entertaining to see all these big name's swap cities. :)

It's been far too many years of seeing quality player after quality player on their way out of Edmonton, because the OIL simply couldn't afforf to keep them. It's certainly refreshing to have the ability to sign big name players to play in Edmonton.

They had a very solid team for the past two seasons and since the majority of the team is signed, they don't have to be involved in this wheeling and dealing to improve their club. All looks fairly well in The Valley.

Hopefully we see that photo seven times this coming post-season, prior to seven thrilling playoff battles. :) I'm sure our opinions on who we'd want to win would vary though. ;)

I think this is a great deal for the Oilers. In fact I'm a little jealous because I would have loved to see Peca in a Sense jersey, but If he landed anywhere Edmonton is a great spot. IMO he didn't play his best hockey on the Island and he has much more to offer. He'll be a great asset to Edmonton and I can't wait to see him play for them. He was underrated in NY and like many other players he'll shine once he leaves NY
I guess the Tucker to Edmonton rumours are now off the board?
I would have called this thread "Newest Oiler is Dirty Peca" :]
