Sportsnet has learned Sergei Gonchar has agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with Pittsburgh and Jarome Iginla has agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract to remain a Flame.

Sportsnet.ca -- The Penguins have added a quarterback to help Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby on the power play. Sportsnet has learned longtime Washington Capital Sergei Gonchar has agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with Pittsburgh.

The 30-year-old Russian spent his entire career in Washington before being moved to Boston at the 2003-04 trade deadline. A former first-round draft pick, Gonchar has appeared in 669 games in his 10-year career, recording 148 goals and 425 points.

The same Penguins who almost went belly up from a 20 million payroll.... the same Pens who have the worst attendance in hockey.... suddenly have the cash to land both Gonchar AND Needs?????

Reports are teams that have offered contracts have told his agent that they can't wait for him to decide. This could be just that so they sign Gonchar instead

It is bizarre that the small market teams such as Pittsburgh and Edmonton can suddenly afford to sign top players. :conspire:

Actually the bankruptcy court ordered budgeting the Pens needed to do has ended. That along with Revenue Sharing allows the Pens to spend. Same with other small market teams.
