If this is true, terms better not be high when Gelinas went for 1.9 for two years and is (IMO) the better player. We cold've matched that. I can't read Gelinas mind, but if he was willing to come out East you think he'd rather play for a bigger contender, in Canada to boot.

Still not official, but the terms are apparently 2.1M over 4 years. If that is indeed the case than forget Gelinas. I was never overly high on Lapointe, but he is still very servicable (good for 30+ points), bring grit, experience, and 2 Stanley Cup rings to the table and at that price is way more than welcome.

Go Muckler!*

*Hopefully my hopes aren't up for nothing. Seems fishy he'd sign for that low when he already has two cup rings.

At $550k a year, that'd be one of the best signings of the year.. I'll wait for a source though :thumb:

If it's true, congrats, at least your GM is doing something, and what a great price! I'm going to go off and cry now so don't mind me

Eklund :)

:rollover:

I hope for Ottawa its correct. Most likely it would be 2.1 million a season

So far he isn't a Sen

This is a good way to see if a deal will be done. Earlier they had Malik as a Ranger, before it was even announced :thumb: :coffee:

Upon further thought, I've come to think that it likely won't be totally evenly spread over all the years, Lapointe likely wouldn't agree to that. Still, 2.1M over 4 years can be spread very fairly, even if it doesn't see him make just over the minimum every year.

John Muckler has repeatedly said the Sens will get their RFA's signed before going after any FA's and that when they do go to market, no big names will be sought after because we don't have much cap room. So if he has signed it's going to be for a reasonable price. Where there's smoke there's fire I suppose. We shall wait and see.

*No sources yet. I did manage to find Eklund, who has been surprisingly fast accurate with his reports during this FA frenzy, but he's not credible enough for my liking.

TIMMY- McCarty got 800k per season and the two are quite comparable so I think the terms of this deal will be quite pleasant to Sens fans if this is indeed true. Given Muckler stance on FA's prior to getting his own guys signed, he'll likely only be here at a bargain. It'll be interesting to watch this play out.

For cap purposes it counts the same however.. no backloaded/front loaded contracts, that'd only be a "show-me the money now" thing from Lapointe, which is of course possible.

edit: I hope he keeps his streak up, because I'll be a Kariya and Niedermayer fan very soon

Unoffical again, but there been tons of buzz about ESPN reporting Kariya signed with San Jose. Nothing on their website, but apparently this was during a live broadcast and I can't see this much buzz manifesting itself without an actual cause. I tend to believe it was reported, but who knows if the report is accurate. If true, maybe Selanne goes back to California? Anyway, the man still has been pretty accurate for once in his....... can you call it a career?

- Modano to Dallas (although on this one Mike was also going to be a Bruin at one point)
- Straka to NY
- Demitra to LA
- Aucoin to Chicago
- McCarty to Calgary
- Foote to Columbus
- Hatcher to Philly
- Boucher back to Phoenix
- He called Anaheim naming Carlyle as head coach, not as big a feat here.

Yeah, he's been pretty spot on.. I heard the Kariya rumour too, although I've also seen it get shut down due to lack of proof.

Besides, it's not like they talk about hockey on ESPN :D

I've been hearing this all morning on the Team 1200
If it's true and we get him at a good price then he's well worth it. A tough player who will bring leadership and playoff help. Also being French it makes sense for the Sens to be attracted to him. The only thing is he?s a right-winger isn?t he?

Yeah. RW/C. He can play both. And most wingers are interchangable, they just perform better on one side. But I'd likely keep him on RW and move him to C only if needed- he can either take Havat's/Fisher's old spot on the third line. Possible lines:

Havlat - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Smolinski - Hossa
Varada - Vermette - Lapointe
Schaefer - Kelly - Neil

Looks good
I did hear Muckler saying one of his top prioraties was to sign Kaigorodov so how about this
Havlat - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Smolinski - Hossa
Varada - Vermette - Lapointe
Schaefer - Kaigorodov - Neil

I like it alot. Kaigorodov is a great talent, he was the 2nd leading scorer in Russia beating out guys like Malkin, and we all know how high Mucker and the scouting staff are on him. And we have a pretty proven track record.

The problem is that I just can't see Kaigorodov coming over to NA if he isn't guaranteed some good ice-time. We'd likely have to work him into our top-six. Best case scenario he actually agrees to sign a two-way deal and we test him in Bingo frist. Anyway, if Lapointe signs than including Kaigorodov just bounces Kelly off the roster. Maybe we then trade Smoke to the highest bidder? But that leaves us very inexperienced down the middle:

Havlat - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Kaigorodov - Hossa
Varada - Smolinski - Lapointe
Schaefer - Vermette - Neil

Yes, that's actually the one reason that I'm surprised that the Sens decided to stay pat with their roster - I thought for sure some effort would be made to bolster the center some what - It's the only area imo that I think you guys are lacking a little. One good trade or signing for a big experienced center may be all you need to do to ensure a cup final visit. But do me a favor guys, do you mind not playing with your line combinations until the Leafs at least have a full roster? =]

I think how we are down the middle relies on Spezza's ability to handle the #1 position. If he succeeds (and I think he will, he's got tons of wingers at his disposal as a playmaker) then our biggest need for a top pivot is gone. I'll avoide lines just for you blue ;) but Smoke is a vet to center the #2 line, Vermette (or Lapointe if we want experience at center ice again) can pivot the third line. Line #4 is fine with pretty much anybody we put on it. Really, a high energy, agressive, physical guy who is responsible defensively makes a servicable #4 center. Kelly fits that mold nicely and will come cheap upon being promoted from Binghamton.

You know the last think I want to do Blue is upset any Leaf fans =]

This Lapoint thing is suspect IMO. If they sign him for less then 1 million then maybe but otherwise this would jeopardize Hossa, Spezza, Volchenkov or Havlat signings

I expect the Sens brass (Mucks, Murray & Melnyk) will announce all signings at a scheduled press conference for PR reasons, maybe they'll anounce a FA signing at the same time, who knows...

Any words about Lapointe ?

Man.Utd
8-03-05, 9:46 PM
Haven't really been looking but the fact it hasn't been reported by a major network by now, if true, is strange. But Eklund has been, shockingly, very reliable during this FA frenzy and didn't even say this was a rumour. He came right out and said a deal was done and even posted figures (2.1M over 4 years).

Once again, we shall see. If he is in Ottawa, rest assured it'll be a good deal because Muckler has said he wants all his own guys signed first and then we can look at UFA's. But I'm sure Lapointe at just over the league minimum would be a deal he'd jump on right away.

What about Bates Battaglia. He's a UFA ? A left winger too and I bet we could get him for cheap.

McGuire was on The Team this morning pretty much doing everything but confirming that Lapoint was a lock for Ottawa. He said he's heard that it will happen. Muckler could be waiting to announce until he has locked big names like Hossa and Spezza

Man.Utd
8-04-05, 10:42 AM
Well, looks like Eklund struck out on this one. McGuire too. Oh well. He would've been great at the rumoured price, and given what McCarty got (800k) it wasn't out of the question. But if the Hawks are willing to pay him 2.4M per season they can have him.

Report: Prusek signs deal

? Unrestricted free agent goaltender Martin Prusek has agreed to terms on a contract, but where he will end up remains a mystery, TFP has learned.

"He has a deal in place with a team," Prusek's agent Allan Walsh confirmed to TFP, "but I cannot comment on who that team is.

"The team requested I keep that (details) confidential, but that team will release that information in two or three days."

Prusek, 29, went 16-6-3 in 29 games with the Ottawa Senators during the 2003-04 season.
? ?
The possibility still remains that Prusek could end up in Ottawa, but Walsh would not confirm those reports. He did, however, deny reports that his client has signed with the Montreal Canadiens, a story speculated for a good portion of today.

"I can tell you it is not the Montreal Canadiens," Walsh said, referring to a contract with a club.

In 48 career NHL games, Prusek has posted a 28-9-4 record with a 2.23 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.
