Saw the story about Amonte. An interesting move, but again a small market team making a dip in the free agency market shows how the new system is making things alot different all ready.

Solid move for the Islanders, Zhitnik will replace some of what Adrian Aucoin provided with them.

More on Zhitnik:

Islanders ink Zhitnik to four-year deal

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Islanders signed defenceman Alexei Zhitnik to a four-year, $14 million US deal Tuesday just hours after losing Adrian Aucoin to the Chicago Blackhawks. During the 2003-04 season, the last before the NHL lockout, the 32-year-old Zhitnik had four goals and 24 assists in 64 games. He played last season with Kazan Ak-Bars of the Russian Hockey League, with a goal and eight assists in 23 games. Zhitnik was named to two all-star teams during his nine-plus seasons with the Buffalo Sabres.

"The Islanders were at the top of my list of teams I wanted to play for," Zhitnik said. "I spoke with (general manager) Mike Milbury and Coach (Steve) Stirling and they told me what's expected of me. I'm very happy to be an Islander."

One of Milbury's biggest concerns going into the shopping season that started Monday was the status of his defence corps. Only Janne Niinimaa had a contract going into next season, leaving Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik and Kenny Jonsson as free agents.

"Alexei is a perfect fit for us," Milbury said. "He's one of the best two-way defencemen in the game and he's a highly respected player. He's going to play big minutes for us in all situations."

Aucoin, who averaged more than 26 minutes of ice time per game during the 2003-04 season, signed a $16 million, four-year contract with Chicago earlier Tuesday. Jonsson is not expected to play in the NHL this season and Hamrlik is an unrestricted free agent.

The five-foot-11, 210-pound Zhitnik was selected by Los Angeles in the fourth round of the 1991 draft. He has 81 goals and 315 assists in 882 NHL games with the Kings and Sabres.

Zhitnik was a member of the gold medal-winning Unified Team at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. He also won silver medals at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and at the 2004 World Cup.

Now he'll try to help the Islanders reach the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

"I've played in the Eastern Conference for a decade and know what it takes to win," Zhitnik said. "The Islanders have been a playoff team the last few years and now I'm hopeful I can take us to the next level. The playoffs have always been when I have played my best hockey."

I agree, I don't think Amonte is a wash-up just yet. I wouldn't say he has any 40 goal seasons left in him. But I think his goal totals dropped off in part because he was playing for Hitchcock.

I won't be surprised if he scores 30+ goals, skating on the right line in Calgary.

In fact 1.8 mill sounds a kind of like a bargain - if the gamble pays off. At any rate, a whole lot more reasonable than the 5 million or whatever the Flyers were paying him.

Amonte's Flyer highlight reel is not very relevant. It's a question of can he produce for the Flames in the future. I believe he most certainly can. Leaving Hitchcock in his rear view mirror is the key here.

Tony clearly has a knack for scoring goals. He has nothing to prove in that regard. Given the right environment... playing on the right line, I honestly believe he still has multiple 30 goal seasons left in the tank. If I'm right, then grabbing him at 1.8 per is a steal... not at all a waste of money.

Frankly I'm kind of surprised that he didn't bother trying to fetch more... even though he was overpaid by the Flyers, he probably could have signed on for at least 2.5-3 mill with a lot of clubs. Unless there were more factors than money that went into his decision.

We'll find out soon enough. Believe it or not we are only 2 months and 2 days from dropping the puck !!!!

I can't believe i just said that.

even though he was overpaid by the Flyers,

We needed a winger when we traded for home and we didn't really lose anyone significant in the process. We got the contract he had in Phoenix. So it wasn't us that had him paid so much, it was Phoenix who did the signing.

I got some!

Even as much as I hate ME IDIOT, he is willing to fight his own battles and the battles of his teammates. Havlat is not. ;)

You work for the Flyers front office?

I wasn't trying to put down the Flyers, he just happened to be playing for the Flyers while he was being over paid, OK? :)

If these rule changes favor goal scoring like they say... well that's Tony's specialty. I think the Flames got a very good deal.

No, I wasn't saying you were trying to put down the front office. Just letting you know that we didn't make the deal, that's all. Tony will have a good season with the new rules, I wish him the best. :thumb:
