Flames, Oilers make push for Niedermayer

Sportsnet.ca -- Scott Niedermayer and Sergei Gonchar remain the two key defencemen left on the free agent market. Sources tell Sportsnet both the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are among the teams expressing the most interest in Niedermayer.

The Vancouver Canucks have also made gestures, although the Canucks are believed to be reluctant to commit to the millions Niedermayer is sure to demand.

Sources also say former Vancouver general manger Brian Burke will meet face-to-face with Niedermayer's agent, Kevin Epp, this week in an effort to present a case on why the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim make a good fit for the veteran blueliner.

And while there has been great interest in Niedermayer across the league, the only Eastern Conference team, at this point to make a significant push is the New Jersey Devils.

As far as Gonchar is concerned, he is considered Niedermayer's closest rival and will undoubtedly wait until Niedermayer is signed to gauge where his value in the market place should be.

Well I don't find it all that out of the question Niedermeyer going to Edmonton, I mean he was born there! And he grew up in BC, so that rule still stands.

In the Vancouver Sun, it mentioned the Canucks did have interest

But, the problem here is..Nonis is committed to re-sign Naslund..he is top priority. So, we don't know how much money we will have.

Timmy,

I would also think that Calgary would be committed to re-signing Iginla so if they've made a push for him that doesn't necessarily take the Canucks out of the equation.

Yeah but with Forsberg, Naslund, Bertuzzi, Ohlund, and Jovo, how much more could they spend on a big name?

(wink)

Well everybody wants to play for the Canucks. I'm sure they'll all take paycuts to live out their boyhood dreams :thumb:

I'd be one happy camper to see Nieds in an Oiler uniform this October... it's a bit of a shame that it's going to come down to him, Gonchar or nobody however, because that last option isn't a pretty one.

I'm now getting word that Gonchar, Khaibibulin, and Forsberg have just signed $600 000/year for four year deals with the Canucks. Flap ensues at the hs...

I read a rumour somewhere, that the Ducks have to send Vancouver compensation for signing Caryle as head coach.

Rob Niedermayer? ;) ;)

But, to be honest..it looks like Burke has a good shot at signing him..especially since it will be a sit down meeting

Niedermayer would be a perfect fit on both teams.
