Hey Rusty, Thanks for the Invite!! :)

Since no one has started a Minor League Thread, I'm not sure if that means no one is interested in Minor League or they just haven't started anything on it. So, I don't know if anyone here knows about the ECHL. I'm going to start talk on the ECHL.

I relocated to S. California from the Bay Area (N. California) in September 2003. Even though I lived in the San Jose area, I was a Leafs fan not a Sharks fan. However, I did get to the point where I supported the Sharks as long as they did NOT play the Leafs.

Prior to relocating near San Diego, I never lived by a Minor League team that survived (the IHL S.F. Spiders didn't exist long enough for me to attend their games). My only Minor League experience was when I went to Toronto for Leafs games, going to Hamilton Bulldogs games on the nights the Leafs didn't play. I have to say I love hockey at every level. I even saw St. Mike's Majors (Juniors) once. That was back in 2001, when Mark Popovic was on the team and the same year the Ducks drafted him.

In Southern California, they have ECHL Hockey teams: Fresno Falcons, Bakersfield Condors, Long Beach Ice Dogs and San Diego Gulls. The Ice Dogs is the same Ice Dogs team that was in the IHL. Fresno is about 5-6 hours North of me. Bakersfield is about 3 hours North of me. Long Beach is about 2 hours Northwest of me. Next Season the Atlantic City, New Jersey team will be moved to Stockton California, which is about 90 minutes N.E. of San Jose (depends on the traffic), giving our Division a new team and our league a new Minor League Hockey Market. Probably to be really accurate, Fresno (affiliated with the Sharks) really is closer to Central California.

The ECHL is considered the 'Premier AA Hockey League'. 21 miles to the south of me there is an ECHL Team. The San Diego Gulls. With the blasted NHL Lockout, I was mighty grateful to have an ECHL team here. I became a season ticket holder with the Gulls for the 04/05 season, and renewed for next season.

The Gulls have been in existence in some form or other, in various Leagues, since they were founded in 1966. They were sold in 1974, and it seems as if they were sold a few times after that. So far, I haven't been able to get much history on them. They were in the WHL with their 'birth' in 1996. They moved to the WPHL (but I don't know what year that happened), then the IHL, then WCHL and now the ECHL. If any of you remember the IHL, you remember the IHL Long Beach Ice Dogs. That's where Khabibulin played in 1998/1999 (and I think, at least part of 1999/2000) when he was in Contract Dispute with the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Ice Dogs were at one time the IHL San Diego Gulls. In 1995 the IHL Gulls were sold. They moved to Los Angeles for 1 year and then moved to Long Beach. With the move from San Diego to Los Angeles they changed their name to the Ice Dogs, because the Gulls retained their name (like Hamilton Ontario did when the Bulldogs changed from the Baby Oilers to the Baby Habs). The current Gulls owner (a family owned team) bought a team in 1995 to give San Diego another team when the Gulls/Ice Dogs were sold and moved out.

I haven't been able to get a really clear picture of the WCHL yet. But it seems as if the WCHL was in existence beginning in 1995. The New Gulls team was in the WCHL at that point. When the IHL folded, some of the IHL teams joined the AHL. It seems as if some of the IHL teams completely folded. The S. Cal teams, along with several other teams located elsewhere, joined the WCHL instead of the AHL. After the 02/03 season, the WCHL folded into the ECHL, so the Gulls just completed their 2nd season in the ECHL.

In the 04/05 Season, for the first time a team outside the United States joined the ECHL. Victoria, B.C. Salmon Kings. They are an expansion team and had the usual bad expansion season. Mark Smith of the San Jose Sharks was on the Salmon Kings. Even though I am a Gulls fan, it was a thrill for me to have a Canadian team in the ECHL this season, and to have them in our Division was even better. It was even a nicer treat to close the season in San Diego with the final 2 games being with Victoria. Plus, it was nice to see Mark Smith again (I always liked him). :)

I attempted to get all the Gulls history from 1966 though the 02/03 season, but with all the ownership changes, and league changes, and the current Media person only with them a few years, I've only been able to get sketchy information on them prior to 1995. I am going to continue to try and find out their history in the WHL, WPHL, and IHL, but at this point, it doesn't look promising. I'm one of those people that like to know as much history about their team as possible. I have done the same with the Leafs back to their Arena days (beginning in the 1917/1918 season when the NHL was born).

I'm going to contact the Ice Dogs and attempt to get their history as the IHL's San Diego Gulls, but I don't know if they kept that history. I would like to get the Gulls history with the WHL and the WPHL too but I have no idea where to find that at. I'm going to look on hockeydb but I don't know if they will have the history of the team and the leagues or not.

If I lean anything else about the Gulls' history, I'll make updated posts.

The down side of this is, for the first time in Gulls history, they did not make the playoffs. That's really the pits since I don't have the Leafs either. The Season ended on April 9th. Yes, I have been in hockey withdrawal since April 10th. Last season, the Gulls ended with 108 points, the most in the League, so they won the Brabham Cup. The Brabham Cup is equivalent to the NHL's President's Trophy. (This year, the Pensacola Ice Pilots won the Brabham Cup. The Ice Pilots are affiliated with the Leafs and St. John's Leafs.)

They had a new coach this year. The other coach wanted to move up in the League, so he left after 8 succesful seasons. Another problem at this level is the ECHL teams can only have 4 Veteran Players. As well as the trade deadline, the teams in the ECHL make lots more trades during the regular season than the NHL does. They can have a completely new team from season to season. This season, other than the 4 veterans, they had an entirely new team this season from last season. On top of that, they had a 50% newer team at the end of the season than they did at the beginning of the 04/05 season. Plus, they had so many injuries the lineups were almost constantly changing. On top of that, the new Coach wasn't that good. At least right now he is not coach material. He used to play for the Gulls and was a good player, but not all players make good coaches.

Do any of you remember Willie O'Ree? He was the first Black Player in the League. I think he played for a while in Boston. He used to play for the Gulls and they have his Banner in the Rafters. Willie works for the Gulls now.

Leafs_Pam, first off welcome and what a great first post!

I know a lot about the various minor leagues because I webmaster for a hockey trainers related web site, for all levels, NHL down to juniors.

I think it was 2 years ago that the WCHL folded into the ECHL. And at that point it no longer stood for East Coast Hockey League. It's just ECHL until they decide on a new name (last I heard). Because their teams now span coast to coast.

We might place AHL affiliate forums in with every NHL team forum... but rest assured the minor league forum will still be here for the ECHL, UHL, CHL, ACHL and any other league you can think of. :thumb:

I think we should lump NCAA into here also, I forgot about that.

And you are right on the money. The ECHL has positioned themselves as the one and only level down from the AHL. The "AA" so to speak of the NHL.

Many ECHL players make it to the NHL. It's listed on their web site (http://www.echl.com/alumni/), but I have a hunch you already knew that being such an avid fan.

here's a few of many ECHL alumni to make the NHL:

David Aebischer
Zac Bierk
Martin Biron
Eric Boguniecki
Bob Boughner
Andrew Brunette
Eric Cairns
Gordie Dwyer
Todd Fedoruk
Olaf Kolzig
Patrick Lalime
Manny Legace
Krzysztof Oliwa
Dale Purinton
Michael Ryder
Tomas Vokoun

And that's just a small sampling of some notables.

Great to have such a big fan aboard the new community. :)

Honestly I don't know much about the ECHL.

Maybe Pam can keep us up to date on the happenings.

BTW Welcome to the forum Pam, make yourself comfortable and do not be a stranger.

Leafs_Pam, first off welcome and what a great first post!

Hi Matt. Thanks for the Welcome. Rusty can fill you in on me (I have a Forum too). My long post probably surprised Rusty. I don't generally write long posts, and I don't think I ever wrote one that long before.

Wow!! Way cool!!

Yes. The 2002/2003 was the last season for the WCHL. They officially folded into the ECHL before the 2003/2004 season started. Yep, they changed it to just ECHL for now. Can't call it East Coast with West Coast teams. :D (I like to use smilies, but due to your rules, I'll try to keep them to a minimum.)

That sounds like a good plan.

The play isn't the same level as NHL but it still is lots of fun. I've really enjoyed the Gulls. If I still lived in the San Jose area I would have been climbing the walls without hockey. I might not really like living in S. California, but it's better than living in an area that doesn't have hockey due to the lockout/canceled season. Hockey is hockey and as I said before, I love hockey no matter what level it is on. I was a hockey fan before I was a Leafs fan.

Last season (03/04) was my first season in San Diego with the Gulls. When I read the ECHL Alumni, I was amazed at who was on the list. I had planned on putting some of the Alumni in another post. I'll go over your list and maybe add some different players.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Thanks for the welcome, Rusty. I'll try to keep things up with the ECHL, but since the Gulls didn't make the Playoffs, I might not post too much about it. I could bring over some of my ECHL posts from my Forum and put them here. Did you read any of them? If you did, do you think it would be okay to bring them over?

In my first post, I said next season a team would be in Stockton California. That the Atlantic City (NJ) Boardwalk Bullies were relocating to Stockton. I don't know anything about Atlantic City because they didn't play the Gulls out here. I read yesterday they have only been in Atlantic City for 4 years. They were moved from Birmingham, Alabama to Atlantic City prior to the 2001-02 season. The original ownership group in Birmingham included Michael Reinsdorf's father Jerry Reinsdorf, who is chairman of both the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association and the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball.

The article mentions their Captain Ian Walterson had a stroke. I couldn't find anything about Ian on the Bullies Website or the ECHL website. I hope he's okay.

Packing Day For Bullies

April 19, 2005

By Susan Lulgjuraj
Staff Writer

The Press of Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Scott Horvath and Fraser Clair stood side by side in the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies' locker room as they have done all season on Monday.

Clair was making jokes as usual. The class clown never has a quiet moment and Horvath was laughing a long.

The locker-room neighbors prepared together all season and shared many jokes along the way, but this time was the last time.

They emptied their lockers, piece by piece, burying their equipment into their bags.

Horvath, who with the Bullies since last season, used his old UMass hockey bag, Clair, like many other players, improvised with a garbage bag.

And like that, their time with the Bullies was over.

The franchise was sold to ownership group in Stockton, Calif., where it will resume play next season.

"It's like losing a brother," Clair said. "These guys know everything about you, you know everything about them. It's going to be tough not seeing them every day."

They will see each for another few days. They have a planned golf outing today, but that might be it.

Players will start departing for their respective homes Thursday. Some players will linger into the weekend.

"It takes a while for it to sink in," Horvath said. "Then you finally start to realize it's over. I think the toughest thing is not knowing about next year."

The front office will vacate Boardwalk Hall next Friday and like the players, uncertainties lie ahead for all. None of them has a job lined up for next season.

"I think the success we have enjoyed has put me in a very good situation at this level," Atlantic City coach Matt Thomas said. "But there is just a big question mark."

Atlantic City had to put together a list of six to eight players for Stockton to protect. Stockton will have the opportunity to sign those players and will control their rights within the ECHL.

If those players choose not to play for Stockton, they can play in another league or have their rights traded to another team.

The protected players have yet to be disclosed, but the only player who is definitely not going to be on it is Ian Walterson, who has rooted himself in Egg Harbor Township.

Walterson was noticeably missing from Sunday's game and the locker room on Monday. The team captain was the cornerstone for Atlantic City through its four seasons.

He left Wednesday's game with an unknown injury and since has been in Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point after suffering a stroke.

"It hard for us. A lot of guys have such a tight bond, like me and (Dave) Reid and Walterson," said Jake Moreland who was on the team since the 2002-03 season when Atlantic City won the Kelly Cup. "(Walterson) is definitely a guy we would have liked to have in the locker room. Without him in the lineup it takes some of the edge away."

There were still some who chose to take the day laughing and joking with their friends, rather than emptying their lockers - holding off the inevitable.

But by the end of the week, the locker room will be bare with only the stench of hockey left behind.

If the sudden end to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies wasn't felt Sunday, the feeling was overwhelming on Monday when they gathered in the locker room as a group for the last time.

"In college it's a little different because only four or five guys leave every year," Jason Notermann said. "You never know if you're going to see these guys ever again. I didn't want it to be over. I couldn't imagine playing without these guys."

This was their 2004/2005 Roster. It will be interesting to see how many are resigned for next season in Stockton.

Near the bottom is Trevor Koenig. Trevor was in San Diego and was the Goalie here for 3 or 4 years. He asked to be traded because he didn't like the new Coach (former Assistant Coach), Martin St. Amour. I've been hearing that a lot of the players from last season left because they knew he was going to be the new Head Coach (same for some of the players this season). That left SD with 2 inconsistent Goalies. I have a feeling if Trevor hadn't been traded the Gulls would have made the Playoffs. Our loss was Atlantic City's gain.

Board Approves Reinsdorf's Purchase, Stockton Relocation

January 31, 2005

Team Begins Play In 2005-06 In 10,000-Seat Arena

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced on Monday that the Board of Governors has approved a Transfer of Controlling Interest for the Atlantic City Membership from Atlantic City Hockey, LLC to Stockton Hockey Franchise Group which is headed by Michael A. Reinsdorf.

The Board also approved a Transfer of Home Territory from Atlantic City, N.J. to Stockton, Calif. where the team is scheduled to begin play in 2005-06 in a 10,000-seat arena that is part of a waterfront development in downtown Stockton. The multi-purpose facility will have 24 suites and 400 club seats as well as offices for the sports teams and the arena operations and management staff.

Chairman of the Board for the Stockton group is Michael Reinsdorf, who is a member of the executive committee that oversees the operations of the United Center in Chicago and he also attends the NBA Board of Governors meetings on behalf of the Chicago Bulls.

"The move to Stockton brings another strong market and a state-of-the-art facility to our West Division," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. "Mr. Reinsdorf provides strong ownership with significant experience and success in operating sports teams. We are excited about the prospects this provides for the ECHL for many years to come."

The membership was purchased and moved from Birmingham, Alabama to Atlantic City prior to the 2001-02 season. The original ownership group in Birmingham included Michael Reinsdorf's father Jerry Reinsdorf, who is chairman of both the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association and the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball.

Michael Reinsdorf is the managing director of International Facilities Group, L.L.C. (IFG) which has been selected as the facility operator and manager for the Stockton arena and a number of other facilities in Stockton, including the newly renovated 2,000-seat Bob Hope Fox Theater. Reinsdorf's responsibilities with IFG include overseeing new development, lease and contractual negotiations for new IFG projects and overseeing the everyday management of the company. Reinsdorf's intimate knowledge of the sports industry, as well as his experience in the real estate industry has benefited him in several endeavors including the development of the Chicago Bulls Training Facility and the James Jordan Boys and Girls Club.

The CEO of the Stockton group is Dan Chapman, a native of Stockton who spent 14 years with the Stockton Ports professional baseball team, serving as the general manager from 1989-99. Stockton won the California League championship in 1986, 1990 and 1992 and Chapman was named The Sporting News Class A Executive of the Year following the 1990 season. He received an Award of Excellence from the California League in 1992 and was named Business Manager of the Year by the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce in 1993. He has spent the last three years as CEO of the Stockton Boys and Girls Club which was recognized as the Community-Based Organization of the Year by the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce in 2004. Chapman began serving his first term as an elected member of the Stockton City Council in January.
