Mark Messier will replace both of them.. he's older, so he can only be better, right?

Jason Allison is a serious possiblity, albeit quite the risk.

Here's what I thinkt he leafs should do.

Sign both Allison and Murray to replace these 2. Sign them to long term deals and for this year have a low salary, but as the years go on their salary increases.

Can't backload contracts. The league averages out the total value of the contract over the term of the deal.

I don't get it

A few days ago you got O'Neill..for next to nothing.

You lose two players, and now you want to acquire a guy..Murray..who will be asking for quite a bit?

I thought you wanted to rebuild?

I do want to rebuild, but quite obviously that isn't JFJ's plan. So once again we go for it. I think Murray will get 3.5-4 mil, and Allison(or Lindros) will be around the league minimum with bonuses on it. I think if we sign both guys(Murray and *) they will replace Roberts and Nieuwendyk quite well, actually would be better then Nieuwendyk and Roberts, and at the same time we're getting younger and only spending what Roberts and Nieuwendyk would have wanted also.

Terms not disclosed yet. We'll see if Ottawa cold've realistically afforded them. Damn, I was really hoping to see Roberts in the capital. If he had to come in a package with Newy however, I'm glad we passed.

:conspire:

You wouldn't have wanted Nieuwendyk?

I hear the terms are a 2 year deal at 2.25 million per. For both guys.

2.25 million per piece? Have fun in Florida! And no, I wouldn't want Nieuwendyk. We already have one too many centers and there's no place for him in our top-six (we're not keeping Smolinski and his contract around to sit on the bench and Spezza is #1).

Wouldn't you be able to shift Vermette over to LW and take Nieuwendyk on the second line and move Smoke to the third? That would give 3 pretty good lines. Let's see...

Roberts - Spezza - Alf
Havlat - Nieuwendyk - Hossa (That line is FAST)
Vermette - Smolinski - Fisher

... Obviously Newy/Roberts were too expensive.. but if they were to come as cheaply as we all thought they would, I can't see why you'd let Roberts go because Newy is attached.

We could, but when Ottawa opted to not buy-out Smolinski they made it clear they were not only comfortable with him centering one of the top two lines but also expected him to. I won't deny Nieuwendyk would give us great dept, but we're not in a position to just go and throw $$$ at players who don't fill a need, not when we're so tight with the cap after all the RFA signings we're going to have to make. Although making an expception for Gary, or any other gritty LW'er who is capable of playing in our top-six, is fine since he brings an element we don't already have and sure could use (some would say need), Nieuwendyk not only becomes yet another center in the mix but is injury-prone, takes developmental time away from some of our youngsters, and is only mariginally better than Smolinski anyway. He just isn't worth the 1.5M of cap room he was expected to take up (obviously he got more and good for him). Not to Ottawa anyway. To other teams he is. He's worth 2.25M to the Panthers now......
