Thanks to Newfie John, I am seriously considering a major layout change to the home page of the site.
That is remove the NHL franchises as sub-forums for divisions. (the only reason for this was to save space) Remove all the division sub forums, as they wont even get used.... they are nothing more than containers for the NHL team forums.
Create a new NHL Teams section with every team getting a real forum (listed in alphabetical order) each team forum will have a sub forum for it's AHL affiliate.
I am in favor of this change after feeling out this new site for a few days now. Unless there is major objection, I think it's a great move.
I will also shift the order of the forum groups. Here is some further explanation from my response to John in the other thread...
I like it a lot John. The reason I put NHL teams in subforums was to prevent the home page from being so long... but after feeling it out for a few days I don't think I like it... The team forums get lost.
I really like your idea. One forum group for teams, I don't want to break them down by division because that creates an extra unnecessary layer of the forum hierarchy. I will list them by alphabetical order instead. And every NHL forum will have a sub-forum for it's AHL affiliate.
The only draw back is that it will make this home page pretty long, but that's not the end of the world.
Yes, I like this idea a lot.
I am going to put it to vote... unless a large majority disagree, I will make the change.
I think I will also change the order of forum groups as Slappy suggested. General forums first. NHL related forums second. NHL team forums 3rd, and Other Sports forums last.
Going to set up a poll now. Thank you :)
If you have a preference, please let me know... if there is no major objection, I am going to institute this change. I like this idea a lot.

My vote is obvious, I support this.
I think its fine the way it is....
It looks much better the way it is. If you expand the divisions it makes the home page FAR too large.

I think that's a great idea combining the baby teams with their NHL ties. Also, it really isn't necessary to list the NHL clubs by their division...alphabetical will work well.

The alphabet still starts with T, right?
If it's changing... change it quick. Before I get used to the current layout. Otherwise I'll start throwing kicks.. and look out, when I do!!

I'm with NJ on this one.
The home page is long right now.
I need to use my wheelie mouse anyway.
A couple more cranks on the old scroll button are not going to make a big difference.
Besides, there's always surgery to correct the extreme carpal tunnel syndrome I've developed.

I voted to keep the layout the way it is, just because having all 30 teams with their own section would make the forums rather large. Something else to think about, when the NHL does resume (hopefully this upcoming season), how many people are going to continue to follow their minor league affiliates as closely as they are now? I just don't think it's that big of a deal to post something about an AHL team in the forum for their NHL team, because still applies to that NHL team. That's just my opinion though, it's not that big of a deal to me, whether you decide to change it or not.

That's a valid point MD.
Let me also throw this out there. Each forum section is collapsible using this little guy http://www.hockeystation.com/images/buttons/collapse_tcat.gif
every where you see that button means the section is collapsible. (test it out by collapsing the quick reply box below)
Further more, if you collapse certain forum sections, vBulletin will remember to keep them collapsed on your next visit (provided you use the "remember me" option)
Does that change the point of view for anyone concerned about the length of the home page?
PS - I am going to have a thread filled with little bits of info like that so members can get the most out of vBulletin. This application is very feature rich so I am going to contribute regular tips for the members explaining certain things they might not have been aware of :)

This setup takes some getting used from phbb(what was that? ;-) ), but its very easy on the eyes..which is a good thing
Whatever you do, keep in mind the easy on the eyes factor

My vote would be for screw them if they can't take a joke
But that option dosen't seem to be up there?
WellI have been trying to push a Leaf option on Matt, but for some strange reason he does not want to use the blue and white Maple Leaf I have suggested to him........

The idea of the entire site background being blue with a white leaf wouldn't cause any unease among the users. I?m sure you?d get full support
While you?re at it you should ask Matt to put up democratic symbols up too
=]
I have designed a skin using Avs colours. It is really lovely much nicer than blue and white.
Well this is a tight and heated race :)
The more I look at the team sub forums the more I hate them... when you check the last post, you don't know what forum it's in... it could be any one of the 5. They are too buried, it seemed like a great idea in theory. But I hate it now.
The only objection people seem to have is that the page will be too long, but the collapsible factor I mentioned above makes that a non-issue.
So I've pretty much made up my mind. Look for the change some time this weekend along with a shuffling of the forum categories. :pimp:

Hmmm...I guess the Rangers team forum will be at the top of the forum then. :D ;)

Ahhh, democracy at it's finest. Here guys, let's vote on it while I go ahead and make the changes anyhow. =] jk Matt.. I agree with you...

Bluemeanie has been banned. Anybody else have an opinion?

I still want it it blue and white with a huge Maple Leaf in the background and Johnny Bower making a split save on Les Gros Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There will be a "Rusty" skin someday just for you

Oh sheesh Matt you left that wide open for a bluemeanie reply, now we will patiently await his response so that we can practice our mod powers.....................

OK - the said change have been made. I like it better, and this was the wishes of the mini-vote (8-5)
Remember if you have concerns about the length of the home page now, make use of the collapse option (http://www.hockeystation.com/showthread.php?t=112).
Getting the teams in alphabetical order was tough!... if you spot any mistakes let me know.
Also the AHL affiliates were pulled straight from the AHL web site. I know changes are planned for the 05/06 season, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it :)
Since this thread has served its purpose and run its course. I'm going to lock it. The changes have been made.
If you see any need for me to re-open this thread please drop me a PM.
Thanks, Matt
